Dipping the Sheep in a Rainbow

Two hundred well dipped ears flap home.
In front I call a rhythmic song
Cum’on, Cum’on, Cum’on

A rainbow fades into a cloud of violet blue,
the road shone up like pewter
and the flock, centring on the last gate,
spreads on the hillside in a light-washed star.

Some old rustic joy returns
but older now, more controlled,
tiring, just a little, of chasing sheep
and rainbows.

Recent work by Andrew Nightingale appears online in Shadowtrain #36 and in Otoliths. The visual pieces in Otoliths include poems based on patterns generated with a reaction-diffusion simulator, on maps of islands, on volume 5 of Tristram Shandy, and on an unusual deck of cards. Work published in 2011 in Vlak issue 2 can also now be viewed online.

Diane Tang started life in the US and moved to England in the 1970s. One of her unusual poems tells the story of a dog being put down for killing a baby; but such dark subjects are balanced with lively descriptions of the world and of human relationships.
